Safety Tips on Using Electricity

All

General safety guidelines:
  • Electrical installations should be inspected, tested and maintained regularly to ensure safety.
  • Don't try to repair or install electrical wirings or appliances yourself unless you are a registered electrical worker.
  • Don't use adaptors, plugs or extension units that do not comply with regulations.
  • Avoid poor contacts when using plugs, adaptors or extension units and watch out for signs of overheating.
  • Don't overload adaptors and socket outlets.
  • Don't touch electrical appliances, sockets or switches with wet hands.
  • Socket outlets installed inside bathrooms must comply with Electricity (Wiring) Regulations.
  • Fixed electrical appliances should be installed by registered electrical contractor. Don't use electrical appliance with an exposed conductive part which is not earthed.
  • Don't use defective appliances.
  • Don't place the flexible cord of electrical appliances close to any hot object.
  • Allow sufficient space for ventilation to prevent electrical appliances from overheating.
  • Try to switch off electrical appliances especially those high current demand ones before leaving your premises.
  • Unplug appliances if they will be idle for a certain period of time.
  • If appliances operate abnormally or if there are signs of overheating, stop using, switch off power and arrange for inspection and repairs by qualified persons.
Safety Tips for Your Living Room / Bedroom / Study Room :
Electrical Appliances Safety Tips
Lighting
  • Place lighting fixtures on a stable surface.
  • Don't place lighting fixtures close to curtains, rugs, clothes, etc. to avoid the risk of fire.
  • Don't touch energized light bulbs to avoid burns. Replace the light bulb only when it is switched off and cool.
  • Don't use light bulbs with power rating exceeding that recommended by the manufacturer to avoid overheating.
  • Stop using the lighting fixture if there are signs of overheating and have it rectified by qualified persons.
Fan
  • Place the fan at locations where sufficient space is provided for free movement and heat dissipation.
  • Unplug the fan before cleaning and prevent the internal parts from contact with water.
Air Conditioner
  • Don't connect other appliances to the socket outlet supplying an air-conditioner.
  • Don't switch on the air-conditioner within three minutes after switching off.
  • The air-conditioner should be maintained regularly by qualified persons.

Video Recorder
  • Don't place any vessel containing water on the AV product.
  • Avoid placing AV products in a humid, dusty or hot environment or under direct sunlight.
  • Allow sufficient space for heat dissipation, and avoid covering AV products.
Iron / Steam Iron
  • Be careful to the residual heat even after unplugging the iron.
Dehumidifier
  • Don't allow the laundry to drip on a dehumidifier.
Vacuum Cleaner
  • Unplug the vacuum cleaner when it is not in use.
Mobile Phone Charger
  • Unplug the charger when it is not in use.
Personal Computer
  • Allow sufficient space for heat dissipation.
Fax Machine /

Scanner
  • Allow sufficient space for ventilation.
Heater
  • Don't connect other appliances to the socket outlet supplying a heater.
  • Don't place electric heaters near blankets, clothes, curtains, rugs, sofas, etc. to avoid the risk of fire.
  • Avoid using electric heaters in bathrooms.
Air Cleaner /
Air Fresher
  • Allow sufficient space for ventilation.
Massage Chair
  • Don't let children use the massage chair alone.
Aromatherapy Lamps /
Diffusers
  • Don't refill the essential oil when it is operating.

Electrical Appliances Safety Tips
Refrigerator
  • Allow sufficient space at the back of a refrigerator for ventilation.
  • Empty and unplug a refrigerator if it is not to be used for a long period of time.
  • If abnormal operating conditions occur, stop using it and arrange for repair by qualified persons.
Rice Cooker
  • Place a rice cooker on a stable surface.
  • Ensure that there is no fluid seeping into a rice cooker to avoid danger.
  • If the connector of its flexible cord shows signs of overheating, stop using it immediately.
  • Unplug the rice cooker before cleaning and don't immerse it in water.
  • Ensure that the bottom of the rice pan is dry before it is put into the rice cooker.
  • Unplug the rice cooker after using.
Electric Kettle
  • Don't connect other appliances to the socket outlet supplying an electric kettle.
  • Make sure an electric kettle operates on a stable surface.
  • Don't expose the connector socket of an electric kettle to water.
  • Unplug the electric kettle before filling water.
  • Don't fill water beyond the maximum level recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Stop using an electric kettle if the connector of its flexible cord shows signs of overheating.
  • Avoid leaving an operating electric kettle unattended.
  • Unplug the electric kettle after use or before cleaning, don't immerse it in water.
Thermo-pot
  • Make sure a thermo-pot operates on a stable surface.
  • Don't expose the connector socket of a thermo-pot to water.
  • Don't fill water beyond the maximum level recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Stop using a thermo-pot if the connector of its flexible cord shows signs of overheating.
  • Unplug the thermo-pot before cleaning and don't immerse it in water.
Cooker Hood
  • Clean the cooker hood regularly.
  • Don't allow too much grease accumulated on a cooker hood.
Microwave Oven
  • Don't put any metal dish into a microwave oven.
Dual-Fuel Cooker
  • Don't put any inflammable substances near a cooker.
  • Ensure a cooker is cool before cleaning.
Oven /
Cooker Oven
  • Don't connect other appliances to the socket outlet supplying an electric cooking appliance.
Hot Plate
  • Unplug the hot plate when it is not in use.
  • Don't place any inflammable substances close to an operating hot plate.
  • Don't operate a hot plate on a wooden table. Put a heat insulation pad between them.

Water Heater
  • Employ only registered electrical contractors / licensed plumbers for the installation and alteration of the electric water heater including associated pipework and control valves.
  • Ensure that an unvented thermal storage type electric water heater is installed with safety devices.
  • Arrange to have the electric water heater inspected and maintained regularly by qualified persons. Stop using and switch off the power of a water heater immediately if steam is emitting abnormally from the shower or any vent outlet and arranges for repair by qualified persons.
Exhaust Fan
  • Keep children away when it is in operating.
Washing Machine
  • Don't connect other appliances to the socket outlet supplying a washing machine.
  • Allow sufficient space for heat dissipation.
  • Avoid leaving an operating washing machine unattended.
  • Arrange for regular inspection and maintenance by qualified persons. If abnormal operating conditions occur, stop using it and arrange qualified persons for inspection and repair immediately.
Tumble Dryer
  • Don't connect other appliances to the socket outlet supplying a dryer.
  • Avoid placing a dryer next to a shower, a water basin or an open window to prevent the machine from being exposed to water.
  • Allow sufficient space for heat dissipation.
  • Don't place any vessel containing water on a dryer.
  • Avoid leaving an operating dryer unattended.
  • Don't exceed the maximum capacity and follow the user manual to set temperature and drying time.
  • Don't dry clothes containing downs, latex, rubber or wax, etc. to minimise the risk of fire.
  • Don't obstruct the outlet vent of a dryer, and clean its air filter regularly.
  • Arrange for regular inspection and maintenance by qualified persons. If abnormal operating conditions occur, stop using it and arrange qualified persons for inspection and repair immediately.
Hair Dryer /
Styler
  • Unplug a hair dryer / styler when it is idling.
  • Don't store a hair dryer / styler until it is cool.
Ceiling-Mounted Dryer
  • Employ only registered electrical contractors / licensed plumbers for the installation and alteration of the ceiling-mounted dryer according to the installation manual.
  • Arrange for regular inspection and maintenance by qualified persons. If abnormal operating conditions occur, stop using it and arrange qualified persons for inspection and repair immediately.
  • Allow sufficient space around the dryer body for heat dissipation.
  • Don't obstruct the exhaust pipe, water pipe, air supply and air return of a ceiling-mounted dryer.
