Twenty-three primary school students were today recognized for their potential and achievements as young green crusaders at a special graduation ceremony held at Hongkong Electric Centre.
Receiving the certificates from the President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Professor Paul Chu Ching-wu, the recipients of the honour of “PowerSmart Kids” have been urged to serve as role models for others in conserving energy and caring for the environment.
Following months of action and discovery in a tailor-made training programme, the graduates have accumulated knowledge and gained confidence in the role as “PowerSmart Kids” who pledge to love the earth and practise the smart use of electricity.
They shared green messages they have learnt with more than 100 guests attending the ceremony in an eye-catching gymnastic show that merged taichi movements with 18 energy conservation tips.
The students, who received drama and music training at the “Smart Power School”, also won admiration and praise from the audience as they took a different approach to drive messages home - with a drama performance and a song on environmental protection.
Addressing the ceremony, the Director and General Manager (Engineering) of the Hongkong Electric Company Ltd (HEC), Mr. Francis Lee, encourages “PowerSmart Kids” to be green leaders for tomorrow.
“Today’s graduation ceremony only marks the beginning of their life-long journey to love and care for the environment. I hope “PowerSmart Kids” will continue to make progress in the pursuit, while leading and helping others along the way,” Mr. Lee said.
Corporate efforts to sustainable development of the community are also crucial, Mr. Lee noted, adding that it is HEC’s committment to care for the environment, support renewable energy development and promote energy conservation.
“At HEC, we adopt the 4R principle – reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Recently, we have made use of fuel ash in the ash lagoon at Lamma Power Station as landfill materials for the Lamma extension project so that the amount of reclamation materials can be reduced and the operation life of the lagoon extended.
Professor Chu, who conferred the “PowerSmart Kids” honour to students, added that he himself is a keen supporter of energy efficiency. He hopes more corporations would follow the steps of HEC by putting in more resources on green education.
The Smart Power Campaign is organized by HEC to promote energy efficiency among primary school students. Activities included the exhibition of a giant storybook in primary schools between December 2004 and April this year, attracting 3,000 schoolchildren; fun days at Lamma Power Station for 700 students, a radio quiz programme on Metro Radio as well as energy audits for 37 schools. The PowerSmart Kids were recruited through radio shows and fun days.
