In three years time, Lamma Island will become greener, more picturesque and attractive with an enriched Family Trail for hikers and holidaymakers.
This is the vision of “Green Lamma Green”, a three-year project by Hongkong Electric and the Conservancy Association to enhance the greenery and ecological values of Lamma Island, and foster environmental awareness of the public.
Launched today at Yung Shue Wan on Lamma Island, the programme also aims to promote eco-tourism and sustainable development of the Island.
The project kicked off with a tree-planting activity by over a hundred students at a hilltop by the Family Trail linking Sok Kwu Wan with Yung Shue Wan, assisted by a group of 20 Green Lamma Leaders recruited from Hongkong Electric’s Volunteers team.
About 1,500 trees of both local and exotic species will be planted in the first year. This will be followed by tree caring works and surveys conducted with Lamma residents and tourists to collect their views on what they would like to see to enrich Lamma’s ecological value.
In the second year, 500 more trees, shrubs and flower plants will be planted along the Family Trail. Educational signage will be put up to introduce the characteristics of the flora and fauna. Tree caring works will continue in the third year together with the training of green interpreters to allow them to conduct educational tours in future.
Officiating at today’s ceremony, Mr. Kwok Ka-keung, Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works (Environment), welcomed the joint effort by Hongkong Electric and the Conservancy Association in greening Lamma.
“We always encourage and support the efforts of various organizations in protecting the environment, especially in greening projects that can enrich our ecological resources and benefit the community,” Mr. Kwok said
“I sincerely hope that with the completion of Green Lamma Green in three years, Lamma Island will become greener and more scenic, attracting more visitors to come and share the benefits of the programme,” he added.
Mr. Francis Lee, Director and General Manager (Engineering) of Hongkong Electric said that the Company has been actively promoting environmental work while supporting sustainable development of the community.
“We are particularly excited about this project as it takes place on Lamma Island where our Power Station is situated. We have therefore recruited 20 volunteers to serve as Green Lamma Leaders to help in the project,” Mr. Lee added.
He expected that by supporting this project, the Company could contribute by creating a greener environment for Lamma and would attract more people to visit the Island, bringing both economic and environmental benefits.
Ms. Lister Cheung, Chief Executive of the Conservancy Association thanked the many government authorities and local groups for their support of the programme.
She said, “Green Lamma Green is not simply a greening project to enhance the environment. It is also a good example of Public-Private Partnership, which demonstrates the concerted efforts of all in promoting environmental protection, education and sustainable development.”
The Conservancy Association will coordinate the project and provide training over the next three years to realize the long-term vision of a greener Lamma.
