Hongkong Electric threw a fun-filled party for some 60 children from Po Leung Kuk to give them a head-start to the joys of Christmas.
The company’s goodwill ambassadors also visited senior citizens at St. James' Settlement, bearing gifts underlining the company’s philosophy of caring and sharing.
Company volunteers turned out in force to entertain the children at the Christmas party, which the children enjoyed immensely, singing Christmas carols, playing games and watching a drama.
A highlight of the party was an exciting Do-It-Yourself baking competition, which saw the children teaming up with Hongkong Electric volunteers to whip up a seasonal dessert “Baked Alaska” under the supervision of Auntie Clara, a teaching chef at the company’s Home Management Centre.
“Everyone enjoys making Baked Alaska,” said Auntie Clara, “not just because it is easy to make but because it is also delicious with ingredients such as ice-cream, sponge cake, mixed fruit and egg white, which children and adults alike find irresistible.”
There was great excitement in the air when the children, donning aprons alongside Hongkong Electric volunteers, formed 12 teams to get down to the serious business of making the best Baked Alaska, which they were to embellish with multi-coloured chocolate beans, candy sticks and other Christmas trappings.
The excitement reached “electric” pitch when Charles Tsai, Hongkong Electric International’s General Manager and lead volunteer – dressed as Santa Claus – joined Auntie Clara to announce the top three young “bakers” and to present them with prizes.
The occasion also had educational side to it: the children were shown a popular drama “Journey to Find the Imperishable Energy” produced especially for young people by Hongkong Electric to show them how to use electricity wisely. All children at the party and in Po Leung Kuk also received a gift pack from Hongkong Electric for Christmas.
A similar caring and sharing spirit prevailed at St. James' Settlement which members of Hongkong Electric’s Home Management Centre Club visited, bringing gifts to senior citizens living there, and putting on a special demonstration of Tai Chi, a popular exercise among the elderly.
Hongkong Electric’s General Manager (Public Affairs), Mimi Yeung said: “Christmas is a time to share and show care to those around us. We are glad that our volunteers are able to do this through our ‘Caring, Always’ campaign.”
“Caring, Always” is Hongkong Electric’s latest community programme aimed at giving love and care to the needy, particularly during festive occasions.
As part of the programme, volunteers go round preparing food with electrical appliances for the underprivileged. The campaign was launched before the Mid-Autumn festival this year to take advantage of the occasion to introduce healthy mooncakes to the elderly.
