Hongkong Electric is launching a short story competition to highlight the importance of reliable power supply.
It will be held under two categories, one for the general public and the other for students and will last for six weeks from 5 February to 15 March.
The competition is part of a series of activities of the Smart Power Campaign 2006/07 which will run throughout the year to raise public awareness of both the benefits of power supply and the need to use it efficiently.
Participants should submit entries in Chinese and cash prizes will be given to winners. Hongkong Electric's General Manager (Public Affairs), Ms. Mimi Yeung, said, "Reliable power supply has significantly enhanced the quality of life for people today and played an important role in many of their memorable moments.
"We hope participants will be able to appreciate more of what we have and become smart users of electricity."
Judging will be based on how clearly the stories reflect on the importance of power supply and the experiences that highlight the contributions of an efficient supply.
The judges are Legislative Councillor Dr. Raymond Ho and Music Director & Programming Strategist of Metro Showbiz, Mr. Gary Ngan and Managing Director of Hongkong Electric, Mr. Tso Kai-sum.
Entry forms are available at Hongkong Electric locations and can be downloaded from the Hongkong Electric website. To encourage participation, a radio competition on the same theme will be broadcast on Metro Radio between 5 and 16 February.
Meanwhile, a comic book on stories related to power supply will be published this month and distributed to local primary and secondary schools. The comic book has an introduction by singer and teenage idol Leo Ku, who is also the Smart Power Ambassador of the year.
"The book captures stories related to the use of electricity in a lighthearted way, while energy efficiency messages are also incorporated. With the endorsement from singer Leo Ku, we believe that the messages will be well-received by the younger generation," Ms. Yeung said.
Apart from the story writing competition, members of the public are also invited to tour an exhibition on electricity at Wonderful World of Whampoa, which will take place from today till Sunday (4 February).
