HK Electric continued to extend its caring spirit this year, bringing a touch of love to members of the Hong Kong Society for the Aged for an early celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival.
HK Electric volunteers today visited senior citizens living alone in Eastern District, bringing festive rice dumplings which they prepared at the Company’s Electric Commercial Kitchen Centre in North Point. About 1,000 freshly made fit-for-health dumplings were distributed to the elderly. The home visits will continue next Saturday (9 June).
The Company’s General Manager (Public Affairs), Ms Mimi Yeung, said the rice dumplings were particularly good for the elderly as they contained high-fibre ingredients and little seasoning.
“This made our dumplings nutritious and easy to digest by senior citizens,” she said. “The activity is part of our ‘Caring, Always’ campaign. We hope to extend our care to the elderly by sharing the joy of Dragon Boat Festival, while drawing their attention to healthy eating,” Ms Yeung added.
According to Mr. Cheung Hin-keung, Unit-in-Charge of The Hong Kong Society for the Aged, the organisation has registered about 2,000 senior citizens living alone in North Point and Chai Wan.
“They are generally less active in society due to health and financial problems,” said Mr. Cheung. “By visiting them, HK Electric volunteers have not only warmed their hearts, but also encouraged more people in the community to care for them.”
Under the “Caring, Always” programme, HK Electric volunteers would visit underprivileged groups during festive seasons and prepare traditional food for them using electrical appliances.
“We are glad we can combine our corporate expertise with our voluntary service to care for those in need. Since launching the campaign, more than 200 volunteers have participated, benefiting nearly 6,000 people,” Ms Yeung said.
