A writing competition organised by HK Electric showed the importance of electricity as most of the 23,000 participants thought it was more than power supply meeting the needs of contemporary life.
The touching stories told how electricity helps foster family relations, brings hope and love, and even saves lives. Some liken electricity to an essence in life, like water, oxygen and sunshine.
Topping the open category was the story of a mother of four who found electricity indispensable in helping her keep close connection with her loved ones in the United States.
A Form Four student's account of the awakening experience related to street lights and that we should treasure what we have in life, was best in the student category.
The competition was one of the key activities in the year-long Smart Power Campaign, which aimed at educating the public and schoolchildren on the important role electricity plays in everyday life, as well as the need to practise the smart use of power.
At the Smart Power Campaign 2006/07 award presentation ceremony officiated today by Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr. Ho Kwong-wai, and Acting Managing Director of HK Electric, Mr. Francis Lee, 21 competitors received cash prizes and merit certificates.
Mr. Ho agreed that a reliable power supply was vital to our livelihood and we should treasure it utmost. He noted the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has a wide range of activities promoting energy efficiency and thanked HK Electric for joining in the effort.
Mr. Lee said he was encouraged by the enthusiastic public response to the annual event where a record number of over 25,000 people had participated. "Hong Kong people have long enjoyed a highly reliable power supply, which does not come easy, and we should make best use of it."
He said several major activities promoting green messages in the education sector have been well received, including distributing 5,000 comic books on energy saving to local schools; 1,000 primary and secondary students visiting Lamma Power Station and Smart Power Captains contest. Also, singer and teenage idol, Leo Ku, was appointed Smart Power Ambassador to drive home energy-saving messages.
The Smart Power Captains Contest winners - Cognitio College (Hong Kong), Homantin Government Secondary School and SKH Tang Shiu Kin Secondary School - shared their campus green efforts with more than 140 guests at the ceremony.
Mr. Lee thanked adjudicating panels of the story-writing competition and the Smart Captains Contest for their support, which included Legislative Councillor Dr. Raymond Ho; Director of Friends of the Earth, Mr. Edwin Lau; Music Director & Programming Strategist of Metro Showbiz, Mr. Gary Ngan; Senior School Development Officer of Education Bureau, Mr. Yeung King-fai; and Deputy Chief Editor (Education) of Sing Tao Newspaper Group Limited, Ms. Kandy Cheung.
Besides educating students and the public on energy issues, Mr. Lee said HK Electric would continue to focus on environmental initiatives at Lamma Power Station.
"Work to retrofit flue-gas desulphurisation plants at coal-fired units is under way and we are confident of meeting the 2010 emission targets," Mr. Lee added.
