Twelve exciting ideas that encourage students to make creative and good use of renewable energy (RE), including one which harnesses solar energy to power an organic farm of Chinese herbs, were today awarded at a presentation ceremony of the HK Electric Clean Energy Fund.

The projects from seven primary and five secondary schools will be launched on school campus in the next 12 months. Apart from the organic farm, a green road safety town, a "micro-wind farm" as well as a hybrid solar lighting system which uses optical fibre for sunlight transmission will also be installed.

Speaking at today's award presentation ceremony, Managing Director of HK Electric, Mr. Tso Kai-sum, said the projects demonstrated a high level of creativity and good educational value.

"We received more than 50 applications this year, which is the highest since the Fund was established in 2006. We are pleased to know that schools have strived to incorporate new elements into their projects to help boost students' interest in learning," Mr. Tso said, citing the sunlight collector system to be set up by SKH Chi Fu Chi Nam Primary School. "Unlike other solar systems that have been set up in school campus, this school is going to make use of optical fibre to transmit sunlight to the classroom so as to reduce energy consumption. This is a creative project and likely to draw students' attention," he added.

Over the past three years, HK Electric Clean Energy Fund has funded 36 projects for RE installation on school campus around the territory. Wind and solar energy are the most common forms, with a total installed capacity reaching over 4,500W and 8,300W respectively.

The Convenor of the Non-official Members of the Executive Council, Mr. Leung Chun-ying, said at the ceremony that HK Electric Clean Energy Fund encourages teenagers to use clean energy and heightens students’ awareness of the environment. He called on everyone in the community to play a part in protecting the environment and to build a greener Hong Kong.

Mr. Tso said that HK Electric supports the wider use of RE in Hong Kong, the Company is now studying the possibility of building an offshore wind farm in HK waters. The Environmental Impact Assessment report is nearing completion and will be submitted to the Government before end of the year.

To tie in with the use of electric vehicles in Hong Kong, HK Electric plans to install charging facilities in at least seven public car parks before year end.

The list of projects receiving funding this year is:

Primary Schools Project Names Project Outline
CCC Kei Wan Primary School (Aldrich Bay) Zero-carbon Living Furnish a "combination house" on campus with household appliances; install solar panels on rooftop to generate green power for these appliances and to demonstrate "zero-carbon living" to students.
SKH Chi Fu Chi Nam Primary School Hybrid Solar Lighting in School Sunlight collector system will be installed on the roof to collect sunlight; optical fibre will be used to transmit sunlight of visible spectrum to classroom. Sunlight collected will be directed to reflectors with fluorescent lamps as a hybrid lighting (optical fibre solar lighting & electrical lighting) to reduce electricity consumption.
St. Edward's Catholic Primary School Solar Energy Powered Automatic Lighting system An automatic LED lighting system with motion sensors powered by solar energy will be installed.
The Salvation Army Centaline Charity Fund School All-weather RE Power Generation System Solar energy will be harnessed to power an irrigation system with rain water power generator as back up.
Yuen Long Public Middle School Alumni Association Primary School Green Campus Powered by RE Solar panels will be installed on a rooftop garden to provide electricity for an irrigation system and an existing weather station.
Christian Alliance SY Yeh Memorial Primary School Green Road Safety Town In the road safety town, traffic lights and street lights and cars will be powered by solar energy, while a solar-powered irrigation system will be installed for an organic farm.
HHCKLA Buddhist Chan Shi Wan Primary School Irrigation System & Mosquito-Killing Lamps Powered by Solar Energy Installation of a solar-powered irrigation system for an existing rooftop garden with mosquito-repellent lamps.
Secondary Schools Project Names Project Outline
H.K. & Kowloon Kaifong Women’s Association Sun Fong Chung College Green Wind Installation of 120 micro wind turbines on a rooftop to power irrigation system and lightings for the green platform.
Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Secondary School Power Generation by Doing Exercises
Students and nearby residents will be invited to try out using kinetic energy for power generation.
Cognitio College (Hong Kong) Solar-powered Lighting System & Mosquito-killing System Cum Students Competition Installation of solar panels to power LED floodlights and mosquito-repellent devices on green roof; a solar power model car contest, a seminar and other educational activities on RE will be organised.
Assembly of God Hebron Secondary School Rooftop Garden Powered by RE and Organic Chinese Herbs Garden A rooftop garden with areas for organic farming of Chinese herbs will be installed and powered by solar panels.
Tung Chung Catholic School Meteorological Station Powered by RE Wind turbines will provide electricity for an existing weather station; weather data obtained will be used to decide whether to switch on air-con in school. A mobile solar power system will be installed for educational purpose.
